Export to GIS File Format
A copy of the network can be exported to GIS file format. This could be used to send files to another user, or for conversion to a different GIS package not supported by InfoAsset Manager.
The GIS file formats currently supported are:
To use this functionality you must have ArcMap installed on your machine and be using the 32 bit version of InfoAsset Manager.
To export files in ESRI Geodatabase format:
- Right click on the network in the Explorer Window and select Export | to Geodatabase from the popup menu. The Select Network Version and Scenario Dialog will be displayed.
Select which scenario is to be exported from the dropdown list. Select which version of the scenario is to be exported by clicking on the # button.
or
With a network open select Export | to Geodatabase from the Network menu. (The latest version of the current scenario will be exported.)
This will display a standard Select Geodatabase dialog.
- Choose the destination Geodatabase you require. The GIS Export Dialog is then displayed.
- Select options on the GIS Export Dialog:
- Export flags - check this option to export flag data
- Skip empty tables - select this option to exclude empty tables from export
- User / Native units radio buttons - select whether to export using Native units / current User units
- Export selected tables only - check this option to restrict export to a selection of tables
- Feature dataset (applicable to Geodatabase export only) - enter a name to be used for the feature dataset. This name will also be used as a prefix for feature classes
- Enter a name to be used for the feature dataset. This name will also be used as a prefix for feature classes.
- Check the Create MXD file option to export an MXD file. Browse for a folder or specify a path for the export file in the File box.
- Click OK to continue.
- The network tables are now exported. Dialogs will be displayed to show how the export of each type of object is progressing. A feature dataset containing a feature class of each exported object is created. The files are exported using standard filenames (named by object type), which you cannot change (apart from the prefix).
You cannot create a new Geodatabase using the standard Select Geodatabase dialog. If you want a new Geodatabase you will have to create one in advance.
When exporting to a Personal Geodatabase, the exporter allows a maximum limit of 255 fields to be exported due to the column limit of the geodatabase. It is possible that this limit may be exceeded when including flags for export. If the limit is exceeded, some fields will be omitted from the export. (Use the Open Data Export Centre for greater flexibility in exporting fields and flags.)
When exporting to a File Geodatabase or SDE Geodatabase no limit is imposed; the full set of fields will be exported.
To export files in MapInfo format:
- Right click on the network in the Explorer Window and select Export | to MIF from the popup menu. The Select Network Version and Scenario Dialog will be displayed.
Select which scenario is to be exported from the dropdown list. Select which version of the scenario is to be exported by clicking on the # button.
or
With a network open select Export | to MIF files from the Network menu. (The latest version of the current scenario will be exported.)
This will display a standard Browse for Folder dialog.
- Choose the destination directory you require. The GIS Export Dialog is then displayed.
- Select options on the GIS Export Dialog:
- Export flags - check this option to export flag data
- User / Native units radio buttons - select whether to export using Native units / current User units
- Export selected tables only - check this option to restrict export to a selection of tables
- Click OK to continue.
- The files are now exported. Dialogs will be displayed to show you how the export of each type of object is progressing. A series of pairs of files with MIF and MID extensions are created.
The files are exported using standard filenames (named by object type), which you cannot change. If you export to a directory where you have already exported a network, files will be overwritten.
To export files to ESRI Shapefile format:
- Right click on the network in the Explorer Window and select Export | to SHP from the popup menu. The Select Network Version and Scenario Dialog will be displayed.
Select which scenario is to be exported from the dropdown list. Select which version of the scenario is to be exported by clicking on the # button.
or
With a network open select Export | to SHP files from the Network menu. (The latest version of the current scenario will be exported.)
This will display a standard Browse for Folder dialog.
- Choose the destination directory you require. The GIS Export Dialog is then displayed.
- Select options on the GIS Export Dialog:
- Export flags - check this option to export flag data
- Use ArcGIS 10 compatibility - check this option to carry out a direction check on polygons to ensure that all exported single-part polygons are specified anti-clockwise
- User / Native units radio buttons - select whether to export using Native units / current User units
- Export selected tables only - check this option to restrict export to a selection of tables
- Click OK to continue.
- The files are now exported. Dialogs will be displayed to show you how the export of each type of object is progressing. A series of trios of files with SHP, SHX and DBF extensions are created.
The files are exported using standard filenames (named by object type), which you cannot change. If you export to a directory where you have already exported a network, files will be overwritten.
Projection (.prj) files will be exported where there is projection information available. The exporter will search for an appropriate projection as follows:
- Use the projection associated with the current map control
- If there is no map control specified, use the ArcGIS Desktop/ArcGIS Engine map control projection
- If there is no ArcGIS Desktop/ArcGIS Engine projection specified, use the MapXtreme map control projection
- If there is no MapXtreme projection do not export .prj files.
The exporter assumes that user units are consistent with the projection being used.
The exporter allows a maximum limit of 255 fields to be exported. It is possible that this limit may be exceeded when including flags for export. If the limit is exceeded, some fields will be omitted from the export. (Use the Open Data Export Centre for greater flexibility in exporting fields and flags.)
