File Locations

This topic describes the locations where master data and transitory data are stored when using InfoWorks ICM.

Warning

You should never have to do anything directly with any of these files. The details in this topic are for information only.

Master database

A master database contains all the master data for the project. The location of the various components of a master database varies depending on which underlying database is being used:

Remote roots

The following additional files may be found in the Remote Root directories:

Remote Root

Files Stored in Remote Root

Remote Results Root

Results files of InfoWorks ICM simulations run on the server or moved to the server are stored in the Remote Results Root:

File

Description

IWR

A binary results file containing all the results for a hydraulic simulation

IWQ

A binary results file containing all the water quality results for a simulation

2DR A binary results file containing all the 2D network results for a simulation
PRN The PRN file is a detailed text results file

LOG

The LOG file is a summary results file

STATUS The STATUS file is a text file containing details of the current run status of the simulation

State Files: these snapshot files can be created at a specified date-time during a simulation and used as the initial state for additional simulations; a method commonly used for water quality modelling.

File

Description

SPS

A snapshot of the hydraulic state of the network at a point in time.

SPH

A snapshot of the hydrology state of the network at a point in time.

2DS A snapshot of the state of the 2D network at a point in time

QSS

A snapshot of the water quality state of the network at a point in time.

Remote Files Root

If GIS Layer files and hyperlinked files are stored in the Remote Files Root, Layer List and Hyperlink paths will be saved relative to the Remote File Root.

Local folders

Each master database has a sub-directory of the local working folder containing transitory data and the local results folder containing local results files. The name of the sub-directory is the Unique Database Identifier for the database. If using more than one master database, there will be a sub-directory for each database.

The local working folder directory contains:

The local results folder directory contains:

Results files:

  • IWR
  • IWQ
  • 2DR
  • PRN
  • LOG
  • STATUS

These are locally stored results files. You can choose to place results on the server or keep them locally when setting up a simulation. You can also use the Results Management facilities to move results to the server later.

Other files

Temporary files used for setting up simulations. Sometimes, these files are not cleared up properly, for example if the simulation fails or is stopped part way through.

To clean up these temporary files you should use the facilities provided within InfoWorks ICM. See Local Folders.

Filenames

All the filenames follow the same pattern.
