Editing Trade and Waste Water Events
Trade and Waste Water events are very similar in practice and the editing process is virtually the same. Both event types use the Wastewater Profile Editor.
The main difference between the two is that the Wastewater event describes per capita flow, and the Trade event describes flow from a single source. Wastewater events have a Per Capita Flow field that is multiplied by a value for population to produce actual flow. The Per Capita Flow field is replaced by a Flow Scaling Factor field in the Trade event. This field is only retained for compatibility with previous versions and should always be set to one. For more details about how total flow is calculated, see Using Trade and Waste Water Events.
To create a new Trade or Waste Water event, see Creating an Event. Alternatively an existing event can be imported.
Adding a Profile
The event can contain up to 999 profiles. Each profile represents the pattern of trade or wastewater flow for a single subcatchment.
To add a profile:
- Open the Wastewater Profile Editor by dragging the event from the Explorer Window onto the main window background, or right click on the event and choose Open from the popup menu.
- On the Common Page of the editor, click the Add button. This will display the Wastewater Profile ID Dialog.
- In the Wastewater Profile ID Dialog, enter a Description for the profile to be added and select a Profile number. The Profile number is the ID used to associate the profile with a Land Use (wastewater only) or Subcatchment. (See Using Trade and Waste Water Events for details).
- Click OK to add the profile.
The profile will now be available for selection from the profile dropdown list in the editor.
Use the Edit button to rename a profile or change its Profile number.
Use the Delete button to remove the currently selected profile.
Editing Profiles
There are two sets of parameters that can be edited for each profile:
- Fixed parameters - edited on the Common Page of the Wastewater Profile Editor
- Time dependent multipliers - used to create a time varying profile from the fixed parameters, edited on the Profile Page of the Wastewater Profile Editor
Editing Fixed Parameters
To edit Trade Waste / Waste Water fixed parameters:
- Select the profile to be edited from the Profile dropdown list in the Wastewater Profile Editor.
- On the Common Page of the editor, set fixed parameters as required:
- For a Waste Water Event set a Per Capita Flow value
- For a Trade Event a default value of 1.0 is given for the Flow Scaling Factor. The Trade Flow value in the subcatchment is multiplied by this factor to give the total trade flow. (This factor is normally left as the default value of 1.0.)
- Select the timesteps to be used as time dependent multipliers. By default the interval between multiplier timesteps is set to one hour. To set a different timestep interval, click the Change button. The Select Profile Timestep dialog will be displayed. Enter a new timestep interval and click OK to apply. (Time dependent multipliers are defined on the Profile Page of the editor.)
Water Quality fixed parameters are discussed under a separate heading below.
Editing time dependent multipliers
There are two types of time dependent multipliers:
- Calibration (observed) - used during a simulation if absolute (real) times and dates are being used
- Design - used during a simulation if relative dates and times are being used
A description of the rules to decide which multipliers are used can be found in the Using Trade and Waste Water Events topic.
To edit the multipliers:
- Select the profile to be edited from the Profile dropdown list in the Wastewater Profile Editor.
- When editing the non water quality multipliers, ensure that Flow is selected in the Flow/Pollutant Variable dropdown list on the Profile Page.
- Select the multipliers to be edited in the Calibration/Design Profile dropdown list
- By default there is a single Design profile and three Calibration (observed) profiles. Weekday and Weekend define the pattern of flow for each day of the week, Weekend being used for Saturday and Sunday. The Monthly profile is an additional multiplier to allow for seasonal variation.
- If specific day of the week Calibration profiles are required, these can be added by clicking the Configure button. This will display the Configure Calibration Profiles Dialog. In the Configure Calibration Profiles Dialog, check the days of the week for which specific calibration profiles are to be defined and click OK. The selected day of the week profiles will now be available from the Calibration/Design Profile dropdown list. (If a day of the week is specified, then this profile overrides the weekday or weekend profile for that specific day.)
NoteSelected day of the week calibration profiles will be applied to both the Flow and Pollutant variables of the event profile.
- Edit the Factor column in the grid to set the values for the time dependent multipliers. The multiplier profile is displayed on the graph. The time values are read-only. (The timestep intervals are set on the Common Page of the editor.)
The multiplier values are multiplied by the flow value to give a time-varying flow profile. The flow value depends on the type of profile:
- Wastewater - base wastewater flow calculated from the population
- Trade - the Trade Flow value entered in the subcatchment parameters
Data can be copied and pasted between profiles by selecting the values in the right hand column, copying to the clipboard using CTRL-C and then placing the cursor where the paste operation is to start and pressing CTRL-V.
Water Quality parameters are discussed below.
Editing Water Quality parameters
The instructions above describe how to set an average value for flow, and then scale the flow using a set of time varying multipliers.
The same thing can be done with a set of nine pollutants and two sediment fractions.
Sediment
Two separate Sediment Fractions represent the sediment concentration entering the system. The average concentration for each fraction in the Sediment box can be set on the Common Page. This average concentration is then adjusted with the time varying multipliers specified.
The Sediment Diameter and Specific Gravity can be edited for the two sediment fractions in the Surface Pollutant Editor. These parameters define how the sediment is deposited, eroded and transported in the sewer network.
Determinants
The following determinants can be modelled in InfoWorks ICM. Each determinant is modelled separately:
BOD |
Biochemical Oxygen Demand |
COD |
Chemical Oxygen Demand |
TKN |
Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen |
NH4 |
Ammoniacal Nitrogen (can only be modelled as a dissolved pollutant) |
TPH |
Total Phosphorus |
PL1 - 4 |
User Defined Pollutants 1, 2, 3 and 4 |
DO | Dissolved Oxygen |
NO2 | Nitrite |
NO3 | Nitrate |
PH | pH |
SAL | Salt |
TW | Water Temperature |
COL | Coliforms |
For more information about the available determinants, see Water Quality Determinants.
The determinants can be modelled in three ways:
- dissolved
- potency on Sediment Fraction 1
- potency on Sediment Fraction 2
To edit the determinant values: first select one of the three types listed above from the dropdown list at the top of the Pollutant box on the Common Page of the Wastewater Profile Editor.
- Dissolved: set the average concentration for any of the nine pollutants. This average is then adjusted by any time varying multipliers defined on the Profile Page of the Wastewater Profile Editor.
- Potency on Sediment Fraction n: set the Potency Factor for the attached pollutant. This potency factor is a fixed value and is not adjusted by the time varying multipliers. (Only BOD, COD, TKN, TPH and PL1 - 4 can be modelled as attached)
Time varying multipliers
The time dependent multipliers are edited in the same way as described above. There is the same choice between calibration and design multipliers and the same rules govern which multipliers are used.
There is a default time varying multiplier, General Pollutant, which is used for any dissolved pollutants or sediment fractions that do not have their own specific multipliers. Select General Pollutant in the Flow/Pollutant Variable dropdown list and edit the calibration or design multipliers normally.
Specific multipliers can be applied to individual dissolved pollutants and sediment fractions. To create specific multipliers:
- Select the type required in the Calibration/Design Profile dropdown list. Specific multipliers will only be created for the type selected.
- Click on the Add button and choose the pollutant or sediment fraction for which a specific multiplier is to be created.
- Edit the new multipliers in the same way as the built-in multipliers.
Additional multipliers can be deleted using the Delete button.
