Dealing with orphan control data
Because networks and control data are edited separately, it is always a risk that you end up with orphan control data that does not relate to any node in the network. As examples:
- If you delete a node you may leave control data in one or more control data sets that you also need to delete.
- If you rename a node, then one or more control data sets could include data that needs to be re-assigned to the new node name.
Checking for orphan data
There are two ways that you can check whether orphan control data exists:
- When you associate a control data set with a network, the test is carried out automatically:
- If orphan data is found, a warning dialog is displayed.
- If you click Yes, a Reconcile based on Asset ID? message will be displayed. Click Yes to reattach control data to network objects by matching the control data Asset ID field and the network object Asset ID field. Click No to leave the control data unchanged.
- The Control Data Exceptions view is displayed. If control data has been reattached to a network object by matching on Asset ID, the Network Object ID field will be highlighted green.
- You can test for orphan control data by selecting Network | Control data exceptions.
- A Reconcile based on Asset ID? message will be displayed. Click Yes to reattach control data to network objects by matching the control data Asset ID field and the network object Asset ID field. Click No to leave the control data unchanged.
- The Control Data Exceptions view is displayed. If control data has been reattached to network objects by matching on Asset ID, the Network Object ID field will be highlighted green.
Managing orphan data
On the Control Data Exceptions vew you can delete orphan data or attach it to a different object in the network.
Reattaching
To attach orphan data to a different object:
- use the Network Object ID dropdown list to choose an existing node or link to which the control data should be attached
- the field turns from red to green to signify that the control data is attached to a legitimate object
- the GeoPlan window zooms in on the attached node or link
Context menu options
Several context menu options are available once you have correctly attached an orphaned data item to a network object.
- Select and find in GeoPlan
- Restore original network ID - go back to the original invalid ID in the Network Object ID field
- Remove linked items - removes all correctly linked items (Network Object ID field is green) from the Control Data Exceptions view. It does not delete anything from the database
- Properties - opens the property sheet for the network object and attached control data
Deleting
To delete an orphan control data item, select it on the Control Data Exceptions view. Then right-click the row and choose Delete selected unlinked objects from the context menu. This deletes the orphaned data from the control set.
