Creating GeoExplorer zones
GeoExplorer zones provide a method for specifying geographical areas on the GeoExplorer window that correspond with model areas.
Model groups, networks and workspaces can be associated with zones. Associated items can subsequently be opened via the GeoExplorer window.
GeoExplorer zones can be digitised in the GeoExplorer window, or created from network information. GeoExplorer zones can also be imported via the Open Data Import Centre or by using the update from CSV files functionality.
GeoExplorer zones are created on the GeoExplorer window:
- Click the symbol on the GeoExplorer toolbar. The cursor changes to a symbol.
- Mark out the sides of the GeoExplorer zone by
clicking and dragging the pointer.
If the new zone is directly adjacent to an existing zone, you can snap individual points to the adjacent zone, or follow the boundary of the adjacent zone by snapping a series of points to it. Ensure that snapping mode is switched on if you want to snap points together.
- To finish marking out the zone, double-click the
mouse button. To delete the previously drawn line, press the Backspace
key. You can continue to do this to delete each line in turn.
Once you have finished marking the zone, the Create New Zone dialog is displayed.
- Type in a unique ID for the zone and click OK.
- The GeoExplorer Zone property sheet is displayed. Zone parameters can be changed now or later.
The shape of a GeoExplorer zone can be changed in the GeoExplorer window:
- Click the icon on the GeoExplorer toolbar. The cursor changes to a .
- Click inside an existing zone. The zone borders are shown in blue and the corner points are displayed in red.
- Drag any of the corner points to new positions to reshape the zone. When the corner point has a dotted cross drawn through it you can start dragging. Hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse to drag the point. When you start dragging, the cursor may disappear. The moving edges of the zone are shown in red.
- You can snap the corner point of the polygon to an existing corner point of another polygon. When you are close enough to another corner point to snap the points together, a dotted cross is drawn on the corner you are moving towards.
- When you have finished reshaping the zone, click another zone, or click the toolbar icon to return to the default selection mode.
To add a new corner point to the zone border, hold down the Ctrl key and click the border. This new corner can be moved as described above.
GeoExplorer zone boundaries can also be updated by using network information or by defining a bounding box.
To create a GeoExplorer zone from network information:
- Drag a model group, network or workspace from the Model Group window or the Explorer window into the GeoExplorer window. The Create New Object dialog is displayed.
- Type in a unique name for the GeoExplorer zone and click OK. The Add / Update GeoExplorer Zone Boundary dialog is displayed.
- Do one of the following:
To create the zone boundary using network information:
- Drag and drop a network into the selection box, or use the Browse button to browse for a network.
- Select the option to be used for creating the boundary:
Click OK to update the zone boundary.
- Network Extents: a zone boundary will be created based on the outermost network node locations.
- Polygon with ID: select a network polygon from the dropdown list. A zone boundary will be created based on the network polygon boundary.
To create the zone boundary using a bounding box:
- Check the Bounding Box option on the Add / Update GeoExplorer Zone Boundary dialog.
- Define the coordinates and dimensions of the bounding box.
- To create the zone boundary according to the defined parameters, click OK.
- The GeoExplorer Zone property sheet is opened. On the GeoExplorer Zone property sheet, click OK.
