Initial Conditions 2D

The Initial Conditions 2D object is used to assign initial hydraulic, infiltration and water quality values to 2D Mesh elements at the start of a 2D Simulation.

Initial values are defined for 2D Zones and 2D IC Zones using the Initial Conditions 2D Grid Window. These values are then applied to the 2D mesh elements falling within the zone polygons.

Initial values set for 2D IC Zones override initial values at 2D Zones.

Initial conditions can be imported from CSV files into new or existing Initial Conditions 2D objects, and can also be exported from an existing Initial Conditions 2D object to a CSV file.

Initial Conditions 2D Grid Window

To open an Initial Conditions 2D Grid Window for editing, either drag the Initial Conditions 2D object from the Master Database Window onto the main window background, or right click on the item and choose Open from the popup menu.

Field Description

Zone ID

Name of 2D Zone or 2D IC Zone

Zone Type

Select the type of zone that the initial condition is to be applied to from the dropdown list:

Variable

Select the type of variable to be set from the dropdown list:

  • Hydraulic - allows initial depth/elevation, speed and direction values to be set for a 2D zone or hydraulic IC zone
  • Infiltration - allows initial soil water content for a 2D zone or infiltration IC zone to be set
  • Water Quality Determinant - allows initial concentration of selected water quality determinant for a 2D zone or water quality IC zone to be set
Concentration

Enabled when Variable is set to a water quality determinant type

Initial concentration of determinant.

Concentration

(Salt)

Enabled when Variable is set to SALT

Initial concentration of salt

Temperature

Enabled when Variable is set to TW_DIS

Initial water temperature

Quantity

Enabled when Variable is set to PH_DIS or COLDIS

Initial pH or coliform value

Horten soil water content

Enabled when Variable is set to Infiltration

Initial soil moisture content for use when using the Horton Infiltration Model.

Green-Ampt soil moisture deficit (%) Enabled when Variable is set to Infiltration

The initial soil moisture deficit (i.e. the difference between soil porosity and actual moisture content) in the Green-Ampt Model. The percentage entered must be greater than or equal to zero and less than or equal to 100.

If no Green-Ampt soil moisture deficit (%) is specified as an initial condition 2D, then the soil moisture deficit is set to zero, and the ground is assumed to be saturated.

Level Type

Select an option from the dropdown list:

  • Depth: level relative to ground level
  • Elevation: level above datum

Depth

Enabled when Variable is set to Hydraulic or Bed sediment and Level Type is set to Depth

Initial height of water at the centroid of the mesh element relative to ground level when Variable is set to Hydraulic.

Initial thickness of sediment layer at the centroid of the mesh element relative to ground level when Variable is set to Bed sediment.

Elevation

Enabled when Variable is set to Hydraulic or Bed sediment and Level Type is set to Elevation

Initial height of water (above datum) at the centroid of the mesh element when Variable is set to Hydraulic.

Initial height of bottom level of sediment layer (above datum) at the centroid of the mesh element when Variable is set to Bed sediment.

Speed

Enabled when Variable is set to Hydraulic

Initial velocity of water in mesh element

Direction

Enabled when Variable is set to Hydraulic

Initial direction of flow in mesh element

Angle in radians from due East

Layer

Enabled when Variable is set to Bed sediment

Layer to which the initial conditions are to be applied:

  • Non-erodible
  • Parent
  • Deposited
  • Active
Layer composition type

Enabled when Variable is set to Bed sediment

The method by which composition of layer is to be entered for each sediment fraction:

  • Mass concentration (kg/kg)
  • Volume concentration (m3/m3)
Layer concentration sf1

Enabled when Variable is set to Bed sediment

Percentage of initial mass of sediment fraction 1 if Layer composition type is set to Mass concentration.

Percentage of initial volumetric concentration of sediment fraction 1 if Layer composition type is set to Volume concentration.

Layer concentration sf2

Enabled when Variable is set to Bed sediment

Percentage of initial mass of sediment fraction 2 if Layer composition type is set to Mass concentration.

Percentage of initial volumetric concentration of sediment fraction 2 if Layer composition type is set to Volume concentration.

Importing from csv file

To create a new Initial Conditions 2D object by importing data from csv file:

  1. Right click on the Model Group in the tree view and select Import InfoWorks | Initial conditions 2D | From InfoWorks format CSV file from the context menu. A standard Windows Open dialog will be displayed.
  2. Select the file(s) to be imported and click Open.

A new Initial conditions 2D object, with the same name as the imported file, is created and contains the imported data.

To import initial conditions into an existing Initial Conditions 2D object from csv file:

  1. Right click on the Initial conditions 2D object and select Import | From Infoworks format CSV file from the context menu. A standard Windows Open dialog will be displayed.
  2. Select the file(s) to be imported and click Open.

Note

If data is imported while the Initial Conditions 2D grid window is open, the view will not be updated until the grid is re-opened. Any changes made subsequent to the import, before the grid is closed, will overwrite the imported data.

If network objects in the file to be imported already exist in the initial conditions object, a warning message will be displayed allowing a choice of overwriting or cancelling the import for each object type.

The file format consists of a version record followed by one data record for each zone.

Exporting 2D initial conditions

To export initial condition data to csv format:

  1. Right click on the Initial Conditions 2D database item in the tree view and select Export | To CSV from the context menu. A standard Windows Save As dialog will be displayed.
  2. Set the path of the file to be saved and click the Save button.

The initial conditions will be exported to a csv file which can be used to import data into another Initial Conditions 2D object.
