Exporting Results to Files
Results can be exported from any simulation to files using the menu options, or data can be exported to CSV files for a single timestep using the results versions of the Network Grid Window.
Results can also be exported to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet by generating a Custom Report. If you drag a custom report into a network with simulation results, an extra worksheet containing simulation results will be included in the Excel spreadsheet for each type of object.
See Exporting Results to GIS for details on exporting simulation results to GIS format.
Export using the menu options
Available for InfoWorks networks only
- Select Export to files from the Results menu. This displays the Export Results Data dialog.
- Add one or more simulations to the appropriate box on the dialog.
- Add a selection list, or choose the current selection if a network with selected objects is currently open.
- Choose a directory where the files will be saved.
- Choose what type of file output you require from the options in the lower half of the dialog. See the Export Results Data Dialog topic for full details.
- Click OK to create the chosen files.
When exporting the results of a water quality simulation, a large number of additional files may be created. It is worth remembering that, because of the large number of files and the large quantity of data involved, the export process may take several minutes to complete.
The file extension convention for water quality output files is:
First character |
The first character defines the type of data contained in the file
|
||||||||||||||
Second character |
The second character describes the type of pollutant recorded in the file
|
||||||||||||||
Third character |
The third character shows whether the pollutant is dissolved or attached, or if this file contains the total pollutant mass

To export time varying simulation results or min/max summary results to CSV files for a selection of network objects and attributes:
- Select CSV export from the Results menu. This displays the CSV Export dialog.
- In the CSV Export Dialog:
- Add one or more simulations to the Sim/SWMM sim box on the dialog.
- Optionally include a Selection List, or choose the current selection if a network with selected objects is open. Export of results will be restricted to the selection.
- Optionally, if applicable, include a Results Analysis item, or choose the Results Analysis Objects currently displayed on the GeoPlan Window. Export of 2D Results will be restricted to the current Results Analysis Objects.
- Select whether to:
- export with a header
- export results in Native or User Units
- export at Results, Min/Max or Gauge timesteps
- Select a directory to which the files will be saved.
- Select the attributes for which files are to be produced in the lower half of the dialog.
- Click OK to create the files.
An HTML log summarising options selected and files exported will be displayed.
For each simulation selected in the Sim box of the CSV Export dialog, a file will be created for each object/attribute pair selected in the lower half of the dialog. The files are named as follows: <object type>_<Run name>_<simulation name>_<attribute name>.
- Select Export to binary files from the Results menu. This displays the Binary Export dialog.
- Add one or more simulations to the Sim/SWMM sim box on the dialog. You can either:
- Drag and drop simulation results from the database tree into the box.
- Browse for simulations using the button.
- Add a selection list, or choose the current selection
if a network with selected objects is currently open.
You can add a list by either:
- Dragging and dropping a Selection List, containing the network objects for which results are to be exported, from the database tree into the Selection List box.
- Use the button to browse for a Selection List.
- In the Output Folder field, either type in the path to the folder where the binary file is to be exported to, or use the button to find it.
- Choose which network object attributes are to be exported. Click on the appropriate tab in the lower half of the dialog, and either click on the attributes you want to export or use the Select All button if you want to export all the attributes listed on a particular tab.
- Choose whether the data is to be exported using the current User or Native units.
- Click OK to export data in a binary format to the specified folder.
A separate file will be exported for each of the specified simulations, which will be given the same name as the simulation with a DAT file extension.
You can view replays of a simulation on special versions of the grid views. The simulation can be paused at any time and the data from one or more Grid Windows can be saved to CSV files.
- Open a simulation for replay. See Viewing Replays of a Simulation.
- Open the Grid Windows you want using the replay grid buttons. Each button uses this pattern, but has additional symbols to identify the grid type. These symbols are identical to the ordinary data grid buttons.
- Either pause the simulation during replay at an appropriate timestep using the button, or move the simulation to the timestep you want using the button on the Replay Toolbar.
- Select all the cells you want to export to a CSV file. You can also select entire rows or columns, or the entire grid
- Choose Export to file from the Edit menu. This displays a standard File Save As dialog.
- Choose where to save your CSV file and click Save.
