Displaying Spatial Rainfall on the GeoPlan

Spatial rainfall can be viewed on the GeoPlan Window by enabling the display of radar cell boundaries and making use of a Rainfall theme.

You can save the current themes and view the properties of current themes on the Layer Theme Editor or the Thematic Key Window.

To display the spatial rain:

1. Open the desired network in the GeoPlan Window.
2. Associate the spatial time series database containing the spatial rain of interest to the network currently displayed on the GeoPlan by dragging and dropping the spatial time series database object from the Explorer Window onto the GeoPlan Window. The name of the spatial time series database is appended to the GeoPlan Window titlebar and the Time Series Database Grid is displayed. Leave the Time Series Database Grid open.
3. Right click on the GeoPlan Window and choose Properties & themes from the popup menu. This displays the GeoPlan Properties Dialog.
4. Click on the Edit button of the Theme column for the Rainfall object layer. The Layer Theme Editor is displayed:



5. The default rainfall theme is called Rainfall Intensity. It is based on rain intensity and the default Map Type is Filled but other types are also available (see table below). Fill contours of rain intensity values have been auto-themed so the Draw Style Preview displays a set of colours as shown in the image above.
6. You can use the default parameters or set up your own as required and click on OK to commit your changes. See the Rainfall Theme Data Fields table below.
7. Turn on the theme display by checking the Display check box for the Rainfall object layer in the Layers and Themes tab of the GeoPlan Properties dialog.



8. It is also possible to turn on radar cell boundaries and status bar values. This step is entirely optional and instructions on how to achieve this are given below:
   1. Switch to the Visual Page.
   2. Check the Show radar cell boundaries box to display radar cell boundaries on the GeoPlan.
   3. If required, also check the Show ground level, flood depth and spatial rain in coordinates panel box to display the following information on the Status Bar:
      1. ground level (a Ground Model must be loaded in the GeoPlan)
      2. flood depths (when simulation results and a Ground Model are loaded in the GeoPlan)
      3. spatial rain (when a Spatial Time Series Database is loaded in the GeoPlan) on the Status Bar.



9. Click on Apply and OK on the GeoPlan Properties dialog (It is also possible to save these settings by using the Save button. See Network editing properties - save options dialog topic for more information on the available saving options).
10. Select different rows in the Time Series Database grid and observe the colour changes in the Rainfall theme on the GeoPlan.

Tip

If a simulation, as opposed to a network, is opened on the GeoPlan, only the rainfall theme can be used to display the spatial rainfall on the GeoPlan. Follow steps 1 to 9 above and observe the changes in the Rainfall theme on the GeoPlan when replaying the simulation.

Rainfall Theme Data Fields

Section	Options
Map Type	The table below contains the available map types for rainfall themes: Option Description Filled Rainfall Thematic displayed as filled contours. GIS layers will be obscured. Show Layers Displays GIS layers on top of Rainfall. Thematic displayed as filled contours. Transparent Rainfall Thematic is displayed as transparent filled contours allowing GIS layers to be seen.
Range Settings	The only available option is Continuous. This will display the Rainfall based on a series of ranges of intensity. Option Description Use AutoRange Automatically re-scales values if a different network or simulation is opened. Relative Palette InfoWorks ICM will apply the selected set of colours in the Fill Colour column of the Ranged Themes grid to the part of the Rainfall currently being viewed on the GeoPlan. Values are automatically re-scaled when the GeoPlan zoom is changed.
Visibility Range	The Min and Max boxes determine the map scale/zoom level at which the rainfall is visible.
Ranged Themes grid	Please refer to the Layer Theme Editor topic for details on how to set up themes using the controls in this grid. Two important points: The more ranges that are selected, the smoother the colour effect will be when using filled contours. InfoWorks ICM can interpolate between the colours of the first and last rows of the Fill Colour to create a graduated set of colours.
