Adding a bridge to an InfoWorks ICM river model

This tutorial has been designed to help you understand the various steps involved in adding a bridge to a river model in InfoWorks ICM.

Important Note

Before making a start on this tutorial, please ensure you have read the Tutorials Welcome page as it contains important information about installing the provided example data.

When building bridges, the basic assumption in InfoWorks ICM is that you have reliable survey data available in an external source. This would typically be bridge cross section data (X,Y,Z points) for the front and back face of the bridge and also the deck of the bridge. In addition, cross section data of the reach just upstream of the bridge is needed (the contraction reach) and finally, cross section data for a sort distance downstream of the bridge is also needed (the expansion reach).

It is also advantageous to have good LiDAR data for the surrounding area available to capture items such as bank lines, pond and ditches.

This short tutorial uses all of the data outlined above. It concentrates on the specific Bridge building tasks, and assumes the user has already completed the Building a river model in InfoWorks ICM Tutorial.

The tutorial has been split into ordered sections. The sections included in this tutorial are:

step 1 - Importing bridge cross section data

step 2 - Building the bridge from sections

step 3 - Validating the network

step 4 - Defining bridge openings and bridge boundary

step 5 - Viewing a bridge within InfoWorks ICM

step 6 - Running simulations on the bridge model

step 7 - Viewing simulation results
